Starting therapy? Here are 3 things that might be helpful
The value of therapy is immense and can positively impact various aspects of your life. There are a variety of ideas about what therapy is and it can get a little confusing. With a little understanding of the process, you can experience the benefits.
Here are three things that might be helpful when getting started!
Be open and honest
It's important to establish trust and build a strong therapeutic relationship with your therapist. Being open and honest about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences can facilitate a more effective therapeutic process. Like any relationship, it takes time to build trust with your therapist and this is an important step in the process.
Set realistic expectations
I get it, you want things to be different and feel like you’re already so far behind. Therapy is like learning to play an instrument; you have to practice hitting each note before you can play a melody. Set realistic expectations for yourself and understand that change and growth can be gradual. Patience and persistence are key.
Take an active role
Therapy is a collaborative process. Take an active role by engaging in the sessions, sharing your experience, asking questions, and providing feedback. Remember, you are an important part of the therapeutic process.
It’s completely normal to feel nervous or unsure of what to expect especially if this is your first time. Sharing this when you meet with your therapist is a great way to start your session.
These tips are general and will likely vary depending on your specific circumstances and goals. It’s always a good idea to discuss any concerns or questions you have with your therapist directly. I know I really appreciate hearing feedback from my clients!
